When traveling, we all know it’s usually cheaper to book a flight with a layover versus direct- but a layover isn’t so bad when it can be enjoyable. The Singapore airport has a rooftop pool, jacuzzi, pool bar, movie theater and it’s warm outside year round! What more do you need?
Rooftop Pool
From the airport, go to the Terminal 1 Acrotel Transit hotel. It cost $12 USD to enjoy 3 hours at the pool complete with jacuzzi, pool bar and showers. I can’t think of a better layover than this. Theres an option to upgrade to $18 to also enjoy the gym, library, a meal and drink. This is my kind of airport.
Movie Theater
Theres actually 2 movie theaters in the airport. These movies are complimentary and the Terminal 2 theater is open 24 hours/day. The Terminal 2 theater is located in departures on level 3, near the Sunflower Garden. The Terminal 3 theater is also in departures on level 3 near the transit lounge. You can check the schedule and movie times here.
Butterfly Garden
This is the worlds first butterfly garden in an airport and holds over 1000 butterflies with over 40 species and a 20 foot waterfall. It’s located in the Terminal 3 transit area, departure hall levels 2 and 3.
Gardens by the Bay
Depending how long your layover is, you could venture into the city to see the Gardens by the Bay. It’s really beautiful when it’s all lit up at night but you can visit during the day as well. Theres a free light show daily at 7:45pm and 8:45pm. The 10 minute show can be enjoyed from the ground or pay $6 to go up in the OCBC Skyway bridge that connects the super trees (ticket booth closes at 8pm).
Theres actually a rooftopbar at the top of one of these Supertrees (by IndoChine). It’s a $15 cover and includes 1 drink. Although theres a great panoramic view of the Marina Bay Sands from here, keep in mind you can’t see the light show.
To get here from the airport, you can take the MRT public transit system. Also, the airport offers a $6 shuttle to the city center and leaves every 15-30 minutes. Singapore is an expensive city so this is a much cheaper than a taxi.
Hello Kitty Orchid Garden Cafe
Terminal 3 has a Hello Kitty themed garden cafe for those of you who like Sanrio. They swirl a hello kitty in the foam of their lattes and shape their waffles and other food as hello kitty. They are rumored to close in 2019 so check it out while you still can.
Not only is the Singapore airport the best place to have a layover, they are in the midst of adding a nature inspired amusement park amongst other things.
